My new Vista computer!

The day Windows Vista was launched, I went on the internet and ordered my dream computer (well, as close to it as I could afford!) That was nearly two weeks ago and it finally arrived on my doorstep on Thursday morning. There are few purchases in life that get me really excited. You could probably list a car, a house, and a vacation on some tropical island among the most […]

Technical problems with LC

I’m not sure if I’m the only one experiencing it, but I’m having some problems viewing LongCountdown.com in both IE7 and Firefox. I can usually see the sidebars and header, but the post or comments section doesn’t always show. Refreshing the page sometimes brings up the post and sometimes not. Anyway, maybe this is just a temporary glitch that will heal itself (I wish!). Please let me know with a […]

Me British, baby Japanese?

With Mami four months pregnant, we have been thinking about which nationality our child should be. It’s really not a hard decision to choose Japanese as Peanut‘s nationality since he or she will be born and raised in Japan and take Mami’s family name. However, I’ve just been reading about birth registration on the British Embassy’s website and they point out that… Under Japanese Nationality Law at the age of […]

Kancho – A Japanese pastime

“Kancho is the ancient art of clasping your hands together, and playfully poking your friend or enemy,…in the rear. It is also called “The Friendly Enema”, and is practiced by children in schoolyards and classrooms around the world. Kancho.org is dedicated to spreading the good news about Kancho.” Source: www.kancho.org When Japanese kids first started shoving their fingers up my bum about ten years ago, I was more confused than […]

English T-shirts in Japan #1

The Japanese love to wear clothes with English on them because it supposedly looks cool, yet they often can’t understand what these slogans say. This week I had one student with the expression “No Time to Kill” emblazoned on her shirt, which although perfectly acceptable English, I doubt this housewife is busy enough to warrant wearing such a shirt! Clothing manufacturers take advantage of this ‘English is fashionable’ attitude and […]

Racist Japanese magazine

Checking my feeds today, I read Japan Probe’s post (Boycott Family Mart) about an anti-foreigner magazine called Gaijni Hanzai Ura Fairu, meaning ‘Foreigner Crime File’. Along with James at Japan Probe, foreign commentators, including Arudou Debito, are bringing this publication to the attention of the masses and encouraging a boycott of any store opting to sell it. The convenience store Family Mart is one place that sells it, and it’s […]

Ordering books from overseas

I’ve just spent the last two hours browsing the books at http://teachershop.scholastic.co.uk/, and have come away empty-handed, but not without a fight! I registered, and went through the shopping cart procedure until the final step when I was finally able to see the shipping cost. For some inexplicable reason, the cost of shipping was 20% of the order, which in my case was over 7,000 yen! Feeling that that was […]
