My first videoblog

Back in October last year, I wrote about long distance friendships and how video conferencing is bringing people closer together despite huge geographical divides. In response to that post, I got an email from a company called SightSpeed who encouraged me to try their own free, video conferencing software.

What I didn’t realize until now was that you can actually video yourself and embed that video in your blog, without making it as public as it would be if you used YouTube or Google Video. So, here is my first videoblog….

If you think this is something I should do more often, please let me know by leaving a comment. Likewise, if you can’t see or hear the video, I’d like to know about that, too.

Wait! Before you comment on that annoying SightSpeed logo floating under my nose instead of under my finger when I tried to point it out, there is a reason! I edited the code to make the video much bigger than its original size. If I had stuck to the original, small version, the logo would have been sitting nicely in the bottom-right hand corner. I also said in the video that if you click the logo you’ll go to the Sightspeed site. However, all it seems to do is pause the video. Oh well. Anyway, here’s the link to SightSpeed.

If you like, you can find me on Twitter at @nick_ramsay. I'd love to hear from you!

  1. What a great service! With my upcoming wedding, I’ll be moving from Canada to Japan in the next few months and I’ve been wondering how I might more effectively communicate with my family while over there.

As it is, there is a three hour time difference between my family and I (I’m in Vancouver, they’re an hour from Niagara Falls), but this is a workable time difference. The 13 hour difference is going to make the phone conversation window much more narrow.

That’s a pretty nice phone you’ve got there. Does it come with Bluetooth? 😛

    1. Until my parents retired, I had to wait for weekends to call them because of the time difference. Now I can just call when I get home from work in the evenings, but I know what you mean.

I’m not too sure what Bluetooth is, but if you’re talking about phones connecting with each other just like the Nintendo DS does, then yeah, I think it’s been standard in phones here for some time now. Never used it though!

  2. Nick, I did manage to see the video and thought it was quite good. New phone hey!!!!! I will check out the website you mentioned as while skype is okay, it would be nice to have something even better!!!
Great talking with you today and glad to hear that Mami is doing fine and things are going smooth. Arno and Lyndall’s little fella is very cute and I will pass on your best wishes to them. Speaking of little ones, Jodie and Toshi’s new little fella Shaun is quite the little man and he is going to have one hell of a time keeping up with his two older sisters. We took a family photo of them together and wow they are a nice looking family.
Anyway keep up the very interesting work with your site and will see you Friday for coffee and doughnuts. (I’m hinting mate!! Dooooooughnuts mmmmmmmmmm yuuuuuuummmmy!!!)

    1. Thanks for your comments, Keith. Yeah, Jodie and Toshi sent me an online photo album of little Shaun. He’s truly adorable. We can only hope to be so lucky!
